0 World Comments on Obamas WinSTORY:
Barack Obama would have won easily by a landslide if Europeans had been voting. This Parisian spoke for many.

[Marie, Paris Resident]:
“I’m happy for America to have a great president as he is.”

In London there was widespread support.

[Steve Lig, Civil Servant]:
“It’s a tough job ahead but the British people are behind you.”

[Oyem Hospital Medical Worker]:
“I am happy that the message that you have sent out to all black people is really good.”

And down under they were equally welcoming.

[Australian Resident]:
“A positive change for America so I wish him all the best.”

[Australian Resident]:
“I think it is brilliant, absolutely exciting and I think it will be good for Australia.”

Moscovites weren’t quite so enthusiastic but many do welcome the change.

[Alexander Fyodorov, Moscow Engineer]:
“I hope that you will develop peaceful and friendly relationship between our two countries.”

In China, too, there’s a sense that America may now become a more outward-looking nation.

[Qiu Xiaohui, Student]:
“I hope you can help American people set up more understanding to Chinese. And maybe also help all the people from the world to know what happens in China.”

[Zhang Weihui, Office Worker]:
“I think that your colour skin gives you some advantages that will bring hope to a lot of people around the world.”

In Israel there’s concern over Obama’s position on Iran

[Rita, Israeli Resident]:
“He should be careful. He is young. He hasn’t got a lot of experience, and he shouldn’t be naive.”

But many do hope he can succeed where previous leaders have failed.

[Abdel-Hamid Fayyad, Gaza Resident]:
“In the name of the Palestinian nation, I ask Obama to find a just solution for the Palestinian cause. I hope that he will be better than the ones before.”

[Rami, Jerusalem Resident]:
“All the people who live here in Israel, we want to live in peace.”

Back in a wet and windy Paris a former Labour Minister had one final message for Obama.

[Jean Auroux, Former French Labor Minister]:
“Good luck to you, good luck to America and good luck for peace in the world.”

Few would disagree with that and in the current economic climate he’s likely to need it.

0 President Obamas Ground Zero Memorial SpeechUS President Barack Obama and former President George Bush have joined hundreds of families at Ground Zero in New York for a service marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Nearly 3,000 people died when al Qaeda hijackers brought down the World Trade Centre towers, flew a plane into the Pentagon and onto a field in Pennsylvania.

Mr Obama and Mr Bush stood in silence as a bell rang twice at the precise moment the first jet smashed into the twin towers.

As cellist Yo Yo Ma played a mournful tune, relatives of the victims began entering the Ground Zero site, which has been transformed with a huge memorial.

Tearful family members read out the names of their loved ones who perished in the attacks. A minute’s silence marked each moment a jet struck.

President Obama read a passage from Psalm 46 that speaks of God’s refuge and strength.

Mr Bush read a Civil War letter from President Abraham Lincoln to a mother who lost all five of her sons.

The anniversary service began at 08.46am – the time the first plane hit the WTC’s North Tower.

The Ground Zero site now features a huge monument which opens to the public on Monday.

The National September 11 Memorial has two reflecting pools, each almost an acre in size, in the footprints of the twin towers.

The names of those who died on 9/11, as well as the six people killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, are inscribed on the edge of the pools in bronze.

The memorial lies next to a construction project where a massive skyscraper, office blocks, a transportation hub and a cultural centre are rapidly taking shape.

Before the service President Obama visited the North Memorial Pool, which sits in the footprint of the north tower.

He walked around the pool hand-in-hand with his wife Michelle, accompanied by Mr Bush and his wife Laura.

In a sombre moment, Mr Obama touched the names of the dead before greeting some family members and dignitaries.
