Jan 2008
There are no proper roads leading to the village of Nyangoma-Kogelo. Facilities are basic. But it’s here that one of Barack Obama’s most committed supporters lives – his 86 year old grandmother, ‘Mama Obama’.
Even at 86, Obama’s grandmother still does “agricultural work”. Photos of her grandson hang from every wall. Obama was just two when his parents separated. She recalls his last visit with pride. “He was very happy to come back to his roots”. During the Iowa Caucus, Mama Obama sat up all night and listened as her grandson’s victory was declared. “It’s like a football match and he scored the first goal. Now we are waiting for the others.”

STORY:
Barack Obama would have won easily by a landslide if Europeans had been voting. This Parisian spoke for many.
[Marie, Paris Resident]:
“I’m happy for America to have a great president as he is.”
In London there was widespread support.
[Steve Lig, Civil Servant]:
“It’s a tough job ahead but the British people are behind you.”
[Oyem Hospital Medical Worker]:
“I am happy that the message that you have sent out to all black people is really good.”
And down under they were equally welcoming.
[Australian Resident]:
“A positive change for America so I wish him all the best.”
[Australian Resident]:
“I think it is brilliant, absolutely exciting and I think it will be good for Australia.”
Moscovites weren’t quite so enthusiastic but many do welcome the change.
[Alexander Fyodorov, Moscow Engineer]:
“I hope that you will develop peaceful and friendly relationship between our two countries.”
In China, too, there’s a sense that America may now become a more outward-looking nation.
[Qiu Xiaohui, Student]:
“I hope you can help American people set up more understanding to Chinese. And maybe also help all the people from the world to know what happens in China.”
[Zhang Weihui, Office Worker]:
“I think that your colour skin gives you some advantages that will bring hope to a lot of people around the world.”
In Israel there’s concern over Obama’s position on Iran
[Rita, Israeli Resident]:
“He should be careful. He is young. He hasn’t got a lot of experience, and he shouldn’t be naive.”
But many do hope he can succeed where previous leaders have failed.
[Abdel-Hamid Fayyad, Gaza Resident]:
“In the name of the Palestinian nation, I ask Obama to find a just solution for the Palestinian cause. I hope that he will be better than the ones before.”
[Rami, Jerusalem Resident]:
“All the people who live here in Israel, we want to live in peace.”
Back in a wet and windy Paris a former Labour Minister had one final message for Obama.
[Jean Auroux, Former French Labor Minister]:
“Good luck to you, good luck to America and good luck for peace in the world.”
Few would disagree with that and in the current economic climate he’s likely to need it.

Keith Olbermann interviews Markos Moulitsas (www.dailykos.com). MoveOn.org slams Barack Obama on FISA compromise
——————————————–
The liberal blogosphere was aflame today with new accusations that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill) is trying to win the 2008 presidential election.Suspicions about Sen. Obama’s true motives have been building over the past few weeks, but not until today have the bloggers called him out for betraying the Democratic Party’s losing tradition.”Barack Obama seems to be making a very calculated attempt to win over 270 electoral votes,” wrote liberal blogger Carol Foyler at LibDemWatch.com, a blog read by a half-dozen other liberal bloggers. “He must be stopped.”But those comments were not nearly as strident as those of Tracy Klugian, whose blog LoseOn.org has backed unsuccessful Democratic candidates since 2000.”Increasingly, Barack Obama’s message is becoming more accessible, appealing, and yes, potentially successful,” he wrote. “Any Democrat who voted for Dukakis, Mondale or Kerry should regard this as a betrayal.”Liberal bloggers said that they would be watching Sen. Obama’s vice-presidential selection process “very closely” for signs that he is plotting to win the election.
“Barack Obama still has a chance to pick someone disastrous as a sign that he wants to lose this thing,” Ms. Foyler wrote. “If not, he should brace himself for some really mean blog posts.”

So many of you are upset that I pulled back my credit card last night, making a last minute decision to hold back on a $2,300 contribution to Obama. Let me explain further:
First of all, obviously Obama is a great candidate who is running a great 50-state race. That much cannot be denied. But he’s had a rough couple of weeks.
First, he reversed course and capitulated on FISA, not just turning back on the Constitution, but on the whole concept of “leadership”. Personally, I like to see presidents who 1) lead, and 2) uphold their promises to protect the Constitution.
Then, he took his not-so-veiled swipe at MoveOn in his “patriotism” speech.
Finally, he reinforced right-wing and media talking points that Wes Clark had somehow impugned McCain’s military service when, in reality, Clark had done no such thing…there is a line between “moving to the center” and stabbing your allies in the back out of fear of being criticized. And, of late, he’s been doing a lot of unecessary stabbing, betraying his claims of being a new kind of politician. Not that I ever bought it, but Obama is now clearly not looking much different than every other Democratic politician who has ever turned his or her back on the base in order to prove centrist bona fides. That’s not an indictment, just an observation.
Now I know there’s a contingent around here that things Obama can do no wrong, and he must never be criticized, and if you do, well you! I respect the sentiment, but will respectfully disagree. We’re allowed to do that here. But fair notice — I will never pull a Rush Limbaugh and carry water for anyone. Not for the Democratic Congress, and not for our future Democratic president. When anyone does something I don’t care for, I will say so. I’ve never pulled my punches before, so why start now?
Obama will be fine without my contribution, and he may even still get it before this thing is said and done, but it would be at a time when he has done something positive. That’s called rewarding good behavior. And if that opportunity fails to arise because Obama goes on a Sister Souljah’ing rampage, then no worries. Chances are good that the DNC would get the money instead. But at this time, I simply have no desire to reward bad behavior. Some of you don’t care about his behavior, or don’t think it’s bad behavior, or whatever. I didn’t ask any of you to follow suit, and don’t care whether you do or not. I didn’t pull him from the Orange to Blue list. I’m not going to start praising Nader or Barr. I’ll still vote for him. Yadda, yadda, yadda. At the end of the day, I’m pretty irrelevant in the whole affair. Obama is going to raise a ton of dough and win this thing whether I send him money or not.
Ultimately, he’s currently saying that he doesn’t need people like me to win this thing, and he’s right. He doesn’t. If they’ve got polling or whatnot that says that this is his best path to victory, so much the better. I want him to win big. But when the Obama campaign makes those calculations, they have to realize that they’re going to necessarily lose some intensity of support. It’s not all upside. And for me, that is reflected in a lack of interest in making that contribution.

President Obama delivers the eulogy of Sen. Edward Kennedy at his funeral mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica church in Boston.
Obama recalled how Kennedy “became the greatest legislator of our time.”
“I knew him as a colleague, as a mentor, and above all, as a friend,” he said.
